Dental crowns have many uses in dentistry. We attach them to dental implants to restore missing teeth, they’re used as abutments to support bridges, they seal and protect teeth after a root canal, and they strengthen and repair teeth compromised by damage, decay, and wear.
CEREC Same-Day Crowns
Our goal at Doctors Lake Family Dental is to make dentistry comfortable and convenient for all of our patients, which is why we use CEREC technology to provide same-day crowns. Traditional crowns require two separate office visits, a long wait, and a temporary crown that leaves your tooth susceptible to damage and decay. CEREC is a game-changer, offering all the benefits of traditional crowns with none of the hassles.
During your reservation for a CEREC crown, we first take digital impressions of your teeth, which allows us to create a crown that feels comfortable and doesn’t change the way your teeth meet together when you bite and chew. Next, your tooth is prepared by removing areas of damage and decay. Another set of impressions is taken to ensure that your crown fits securely onto the prepared tooth, then we use computer-aided design (CAD) technology to design your custom crown.
With the crown designed, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) is used to mill your restoration from high-grade ceramic material that is carefully selected to match the rest of your teeth. Your CEREC crown is metal-free and compatible with the natural tissue found in your mouth—it will blend in perfectly with your smile. The finished crown is bonded to the prepared tooth and you’re ready to leave our office with a strong, durable restoration.
Frequently Asked Questions About Crowns
How long do crowns last?
CEREC crowns last an average of 10 to 15 years, but it’s common for them to last longer with regular preventive care and good oral hygiene practices.
Are CEREC crowns more expensive?
There are a number of different materials used to make crowns and each has a different price point, but generally speaking, CEREC crowns are comparable in price to traditional crowns.
Is it painful to have a crown put on your tooth?
No, before we start any work, your tooth and the tissue surrounding it are numbed to ensure that you don’t feel any pain. When you come in for your reservation, you’ll be given a Comfort Menu with additional options to help keep you comfortable and relaxed.
What is the difference between a cap and a crown?
There is no difference! They’re simply two different words used for the same type of restoration. The term “cap” comes from the fact that crowns are used to cover over a tooth to restore its strength and appearance.
How long does a same-day crown take?
Most same-day crown reservations take about two hours, although this depends upon your individual circumstances and why the crown is needed. We can give you an estimate prior to your reservation so you know how much time to expect.
